President Bola Tinubu commended Nigeria’s military for swiftly quelling a coup attempt that threatened Benin’s democracy. The crisis began when Colonel Pascal Tigri and his followers seized control of Benin’s National TV and a military base, declaring an overthrow of President Patrice Talon.
In response to Benin’s government request, Nigeria deployed fighter jets to secure the airspace and stationed ground forces to support Beninese troops. These decisive actions restored constitutional order within hours.
Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede confirmed the operation followed President Tinubu’s direct orders. Tinubu praised the military for upholding democratic values and strengthening regional security under ECOWAS protocols.
