The Turkish government has raised concerns over the presence of the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) in Nigeria and other countries, warning that the group poses a global security threat.
This warning came from Turkey’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, during a dinner in Abuja marking Türkiye’s Democracy and National Unity Day, commemorating the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, allegedly orchestrated by FETO.
Poroy said the coup was foiled by patriotic citizens and security forces defending President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government. He added that members of the Gülen movement, which Ankara accuses of masterminding the coup, are still being apprehended worldwide.
“FETO remains active in Nigeria, particularly in education and healthcare,” Poroy stated. “We regularly inform our Nigerian counterparts about the threat this organisation poses and urge constant vigilance.”
He emphasized that Turkey, through international collaboration, has dismantled many FETO networks abroad and taken over affiliated institutions, especially schools. However, he noted that the group’s global operations have not been fully dismantled.
Poroy warned that FETO continues to operate under the guise of humanitarian work, education, and interfaith dialogue, using these platforms to infiltrate political and bureaucratic systems in host countries.
Founded in the late 1950s by Turkish Islamic cleric Fethullah Gülen—who died in October 2024 in Pennsylvania while living in exile—the Gülen movement, known in Turkish as Hizmet (Service), presents itself as a transnational religious and social organisation.
Turkey holds the group responsible for the 2016 coup, which killed at least 251 people, and has labeled it a terrorist organisation. Despite denying these allegations, FETO remains the target of a global crackdown by Türkiye, which has seized or frozen assets and institutions linked to the group, including schools, universities, foundations, and businesses.
Several entities, including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Pakistan, and Northern Cyprus, have also designated FETO as a terrorist group.
