The United Kingdom has announced that it could officially recognise Palestinian statehood as early as September. That’s according to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who made the announcement following a cabinet meeting.
However, Starmer said the recognition is conditional, adding that Israel must take “substantive steps” to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire, halt annexation plans in the West Bank, and commit to a long-term peace process that leads to a Two-State Solution.
Starmer also reaffirmed the UK’s stance on Hamas, demanding they release all hostages, agree to a ceasefire, disarm, and play no part in governing Gaza.
The UK says it will make a final assessment before the UN General Assembly in September—insisting no one side will hold a veto over the decision.
