The British government says it plans to lower the national voting age to 16, marking a historic shift that would make the UK one of the countries with the youngest voters in general elections. This follows a campaign promise by the Labour Party before it came to power last year.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the move, saying young people already pay taxes and should have a say in how public funds are spent. Critics, however, argue the decision is politically motivated, as younger voters are more likely to support Labour.
The change is part of wider democratic reforms aimed at tackling issues like low voter turnout.
To take effect, the proposal must still go through parliament, where the government currently holds a strong majority.
