UMEH, Delta State — His Royal Majesty Ambrose Odiri Owhe I, J.P, the traditional ruler of Umeh Kingdom in Isoko South LGA, Delta State, has died at 103. The revered monarch reigned for 50 years, having ascended the throne in 1975 and becoming the first Umeh king officially gazetted by the Bendel State Government in 1984.
The announcement was made Thursday by the Umeh Traditional Council of Chiefs (Ogbedion), who described his passing as the end of an era. Chief Philip Utoro, speaking for the council and family, noted the king’s transformational leadership, during which Umeh grew from a riverside village into a thriving community.
Prince Rock Owhe, the monarch’s son and Azano of Umeh Kingdom, has been appointed Regent pending the installation of a new king.
A seven-day mourning period will run from June 2–8, 2025. During this time, all public activities including markets, farming, and ceremonies are suspended. Flags will fly at half-mast, residents must wear black armbands, and all social media should display the king’s image.
Traditional rites included 21 cannon shots, a minute of silence, and the ceremonial covering of the royal stool by senior chiefs.
The king is remembered for his humility, integrity, and lifelong dedication to his people—a legacy that will endure for generations.
