The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has dismissed social media claims suggesting that a new substantive vice-chancellor has been appointed.
In an official statement issued Friday night, the university’s acting public relations officer, Inya Egwu, clarified that the appointment process is still underway and no final decision has been made.
Titled “No Substantive Vice-Chancellor Has Been Appointed Yet for UNN,” the statement described the circulating reports as the work of “mischief-makers and purveyors of falsehood,” aimed at misleading the public with baseless speculation.
“The attention of the Management of the University of Nigeria has been drawn to a misleading report currently circulating on social media, claiming that a particular individual has been appointed as the substantive Vice-Chancellor,” the statement noted. “We wish to state categorically that no such appointment has been made.”
The university emphasized that the ongoing selection process is being conducted transparently and based on merit. It urged the public to disregard the unfounded claims and allow the procedure to reach its conclusion without interference.
The Selection Committee, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Engr. Kayode Ojo, is still deliberating and will announce the most qualified candidate once the process is complete.
UNN’s current leadership includes Professor Oguejiofo T. Ujam, who has served as Acting Vice-Chancellor since February 2025, following the end of Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu’s tenure.
