The United States has updated its travel and security guidance for Americans across the Middle East after military strikes hit Iranian targets, including Tehran.

The US Department of State introduced a three-tier advisory system covering 13 countries and urged Americans abroad to stay alert, limit movement, shelter in place where necessary, or leave if commercial flights remain available.

Donald Trump announced the strikes, saying US forces acted to eliminate imminent threats tied to Iran’s missile and military programmes. He described the operation as the start of major combat efforts targeting Iran’s missile production sites and naval assets.

Iranian state media confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and announced 40 days of mourning along with a seven-day public holiday.

US embassies across several affected countries told citizens to remain indoors until further notice. The State Department also urged Americans who need urgent assistance overseas to contact 24-hour emergency consular services as tensions continue to rise.
