The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a new directive requiring all applicants for F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas to make their social media profiles publicly accessible.
These visa categories—F, M, and J—are designated for individuals traveling to the U.S. for academic studies, vocational training, or cultural exchange programs.
According to the Mission, applicants must now ensure that their personal social media accounts are set to “public” as part of updated application procedures.
The announcement was made Monday on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, with the update taking immediate effect.
“Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J nonimmigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their personal social media accounts to ‘public,’” the statement read.
This new measure, the Mission explained, is intended to support identity verification and help assess whether applicants meet the requirements for entry into the United States.
