The World Health Organisation(WHO) is urging governments to sharply raise taxes on sugary drinks and alcohol, warning they are too cheap and widely available.
WHO says higher health taxes reduce consumption, prevent diseases like obesity, diabetes and cancer, and generate revenue for health and social services. While many countries tax sugary drinks and alcohol, loopholes and weak inflation adjustments mean harmful beverages remain affordable.|
WHO points to the UK’s sugar tax as proof, citing lower sugar intake, reduced childhood obesity and major revenue gains.
