FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has rejected claims that his administration owes local contractors N5.2 billion, stating the debts stem from contracts awarded without his approval by civil servants.
The denial follows a protest at Wike’s residence on Monday, where contractors accused the FCT Administration of failing to pay for completed projects. However, Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, said the minister hasn’t issued any new contracts since taking office and has already cleared N10 billion in inherited debts.
At an event on Tuesday, Wike described the protest as a smear campaign led by corrupt officials using hired demonstrators. He emphasized that his administration only honors contracts backed by proper approval and available funds.
“I don’t award contracts without money, and I won’t be blackmailed into paying for illegal ones,” he said.
