The newly appointed INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, is expected to assume office next week following his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu, likely at the upcoming Federal Executive Council meeting. His appointment comes ahead of the November 8 Anambra governorship election.
Confirmed by multiple INEC officials, Amupitan’s assumption of duty marks the end of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure. The 58-year-old law professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria was confirmed by the Senate after a rigorous screening.
In the interim, National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu has served as acting chair, overseeing stakeholder engagements.
Meanwhile, INEC has affirmed its full preparedness for the Anambra election. Commissioner Sam Olumekun stated that all logistics, including delivery of non-sensitive materials and security coordination, are in place. He warned against misinformation and confirmed that PVC collection is ongoing from October 22–26. Anambra REC, Dr. Elizabeth Awgu, also assured timely deployment of election materials across the state.
