President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, said yesterday that organised labour was awaiting President Bola Tinubu’s response to the proposed new minimum wage, before it’s next line of action.
Ajaero said in an interview with The Nation that labour expected the President to make further consultation, before taking a final decision on an executive bill.
Recall that the Tripartite Committee on the new minimum wage adopted at last Friday’s meeting, N62,000 as the payable sum for minimum wage, but Labour’s first reaction was that of rejection, with Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo insisting that the minimum acceptable to workers was N250,000, which is a drop down from an earlier N464,000 demand.
Similarly, State Governors through its Forum, had declared that they lacked the capacity to pay even the N60,000 earlier offered by the federal government.
The latest from the Tripartite Committee, is to send its recommendation to President Tinubu for his approval, before it is forwarded as an executive bill on a final figure, to the National Assembly.
