Without a doubt, Lauryn Hill is a living legend and this was recently validated at the 2026 BET Awards where she was honored with inaugural Living Legend Icon Award. The historic honor recognized her lasting influence on hip-hop, R&B, soul, and popular culture.
The event featured appearances from some of music’s biggest names like Ice Cube, Wyclef- her former Fugees band mate, Nas who joined Doja Cat for a rendition of If I Ruled the World( Originally with Lauryn Hill), fellow rapper Queen Latifah and Common closed the tribute with Lauryn Hill’s Lost Ones.
In a surprise appearance, Hill’s children also performed, adding a heartfelt family touch to the celebration. Hill herself later took to the stage to perform her timeless hit “Ex-Factor” before accepting the award. During her acceptance speech, she spoke passionately about using music as a tool to express love, uplift her community, and speak truth, even when it is uncomfortable. She encouraged artists to remain committed to meaningful expression, regardless of immediate recognition.
Lauryn Hill rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the Fugees before releasing her landmark solo album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” in 1998. She has earned eight Grammy Awards and is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists in modern music, going on to inspire generations born.
