United States President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the state of New Mexico as “New America,” extending his recent push to rename prominent geographical locations.
Trump made the suggestion in a social media post on Sunday, saying the proposed name would be more “prestigious and beautiful” for the state.
“Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico… to NEW AMERICA,” the Republican president wrote. “So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!”
The White House also repost of an image showing the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.”
The suggestion was immediately rejected by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who said the state’s name was not open for debate.
Speaking to a News Outlet, Grisham said the name “isn’t up for debate, it’s been ours since before the United States existed.” She also accused the president of attempting to distract Americans from pressing issues, including rising gas prices.
Trump’s latest proposal comes amid a series of suggestions and actions involving the renaming of geographical locations. Recently, he reportedly suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait” amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, before later appearing to suggest that he was not serious about the proposal.
Trump also renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on his first day back in the White House in 2025, a move rejected by Mexico.
Canada has also rejected his administration’s reported attempt to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” which comes amid renewed tensions between Washington and Ottawa.
