Sam Neill, veteran actor popularly known for his role in the Jurassic Park franchise as Dr Alan Grant, recently passed at the age of 78 in Sydney, Autralia, from pneumonia. He had been undergoing treatment at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney.

Neill’s family mentioned that his passing came “unexpected and sudden”, sending his beloved admirers across the world into mourning. Tributes have been pouring in for the Icon. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Christopher Luxon said “Neill was one of the greats, for more than fifty years he took New Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today” He also regarded him as “one of our greatest cultural exports.”

Also, Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese said “Neill held a special place in Australian hearts. Wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic. Sam fought illness with the same dignity, humor and conviction that gave strength to his every performance. He will be much mourned and long remembered.” Albanese said.

Neill was born in Northern Ireland in 1947 but moved to the South Island of New Zealand as a child. He started acting in New Zealand films in the early 1970s before moving into larger roles in Australia. His breakthrough came, when he was a lead male actor in 1993 when he played Dr Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Hollywood blockbuster “Jurassic Park”. He also starred in “Peaky Blinders”, “The Hunt for Red October” and two more instalments of the “Jurassic Park” franchise. On television, he portrayed Merlin in the miniseries Merlin and Merlin’s Apprentice.

Neill greatly endeared himself to New Zealanders by lending his star power to local productions as well, like his performance in Jane Campion’s “The Piano”, which drew wide acclaim, as did his role in Taika Waititi’s “Hunt for the Wilder people”.

When he wasn’t acting, Neil would spend time in vineyards.
