The US has revoked all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders due to South Sudan’s failure to accept the return of its repatriated citizens.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that South Sudan had failed to respect the principle that every country must accept the return of its citizens in a timely manner when another country, including the U.S., seeks to remove them.
This decision comes amid concerns that the country may plunge into civil war.
South Sudan’s government has accused First Vice President Riek Machar of trying to stir up a new rebellion, leading to his house arrest.
African Union mediators have arrived in Juba for talks aimed at averting a new civil war.
