Boat Capsizes in Lagos State, Three Confirmed Dead

News

A tragic incident unfolded along the Ibeshe-Ikorodu channel of Lagos State as a boat ferrying fourteen passengers capsized, resulting in three confirmed fatalities.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that the accident occurred around 7:17 pm on Monday, with two bodies initially recovered and 11 passengers rescued.

Dr. Damilola Emmanuel, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waterways Authority, provided updates on the recovery efforts, confirming that the last passenger’s body was recovered on Tuesday.

The boat, named Oluwaseyifunmi and with a capacity for 20 passengers, departed from Addax Jetty before tragedy struck along the Ikorodu channel.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, stated that all rescued passengers had been transported to the Ibeshe Ferry Terminal for further assistance.

According to Wuraola Alake, spokesperson for the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), local boat operators and LASWA teams were among the first responders, with a joint effort to rescue passengers and manage the aftermath of the incident.

The cause of the boat capsizing is under investigation, with authorities emphasizing the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of waterway transportation in Lagos State.
