The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, a sub-department of the state Ministry of Justice, has issued a stern warning against false accusations of domestic and sexual violence by citizens.
This cautionary message was conveyed by the Executive Secretary of the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, during an interview on Thursday.
Vivour-Adeniyi expressed concern over the prevalence of false accusations and statements by complainants, emphasizing that the agency will always conduct thorough investigations before seeking justice in the court of law.
She cited the Lagos State Domestic Violence Law, which stipulates that false statements regarding domestic and sexual violence carry a penalty of three years imprisonment.
“It is imperative to recognize that if a person did not experience domestic or sexual violence, they are not a victim,” Vivour-Adeniyi asserted. She acknowledged the possibility of individuals attempting to exploit the agency’s procedures and protocols, underscoring the importance of conducting comprehensive investigations to validate allegations.
“When a sexual violence case is reported, investigation will be conducted, medical evidence must also be gathered, and the survivor will be contacted for medical evaluation to determine if there is any evidence of penetration,” she explained.
Vivour-Adeniyi clarified that law enforcement agencies and health providers play pivotal roles in verifying allegations and ensuring justice is served. She highlighted the collaborative efforts between the agency and the police in investigating cases of domestic and sexual violence.
Regarding gender preferences in service delivery, Vivour-Adeniyi dismissed such notions, affirming that the agency is committed to providing justice for all individuals, irrespective of gender or race.
