Brian Murphy, the renowned actor known for his roles in the 1970s British sitcoms Man About the House and George and Mildred, has passed away at the age of 92. He died peacefully at his home in Kent on Sunday morning.
Murphy, who had a significant partnership with theatre director Joan Littlewood early in his career, later appeared in notable television shows like Holby City, The Catherine Tate Show, Benidorm, and Last of the Summer Wine. His friend and agent, Thomas Bowington, paid tribute to Murphy’s “talent and humanity,” describing him as a “joyful and profoundly good-hearted man.”
Born in 1932 on the Isle of Wight, Murphy began his acting career in the 1950s with Theatre Workshop, founded by Littlewood and Gerry Raffles, focusing on modernizing theater for working-class audiences. He featured in numerous Shakespeare productions and appeared in Littlewood’s only feature film, Sparrows Can’t Sing.
Murphy’s career reached new heights with his iconic role in Man About the House, followed by the spin-off George and Mildred, where he played the henpecked George Roper opposite Yootha Joyce as his wife. He is survived by his wife, Hi-de-Hi! actress Linda Regan, and their two sons. Regan described him as her “soulmate,” and said she would “love him forever.“
