The Nigerian Senate on Thursday, resolved to initiate an open national dialogue with stakeholders, particularly State governors, and to meet with President Bola Tinubu over the poorly conducted local government council elections in states across the country.
The Upper Legislative chamber strongly condemned the worrying development across the 36 states where the political party in power always wins 100 per cent or 99% of seats each time a local government council election is conducted, calling for urgent actions to rescue the third tier of government.
The resolutions came after a motion by Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, representing Benue South, and co-sponsored by other Senators.
Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio called for measures, including a national dialogue, to discuss solutions to what they described as sham elections at the third tier of government.
