UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to crack down on illegal foreign workers as part of his administration’s immigration reforms.
Since assuming office in July 2024, Starmer has introduced policies aimed at balancing strict enforcement with fairness—an approach seen as more measured compared to that of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.
However, increasing pressure from the Conservative Party and the rising influence of Reform UK, both advocating tougher immigration controls, has prompted Starmer to take a stronger stance.
“Too many people are working illegally in the UK. We are putting a stop to it,” Starmer posted on social media on Monday.
The announcement coincided with the Home Office’s new initiative to ramp up immigration raids targeting unauthorized workers. Officials also reported a significant increase in deportations, with workplace enforcement actions and arrests rising by around 38% since Labour took office.
Reports suggest the government is considering broadcasting deportation footage to reinforce its commitment to tackling illegal immigration.
In November 2024, Starmer criticized the previous Conservative government for its immigration policies, stating, “They increased immigration numbers; we will bring them down.“
His latest move comes shortly after Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, proposed stricter immigration policies.
