US President Joe Biden has called for the “temperature of politics” to be lowered after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, who says he was shot in the ear during the Saturday rally, but calls on Americans to “stand united”.
Biden in a primetime address from the White House, strongly condemned the shooting and repeatedly stressed that politics must be an “arena for peaceful debate” as “Violence is never the answer”.
The president also sent well wishes to Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, and paid tribute to 50 year old “hero” Corey Comperatore, who was killed at the Pennsylvania campaign event while protecting his family.
The gunman identified as 20 year old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by the Secret Service but his motive remains a mystery.
The FBI, which says “Suspicious devices” were found in Crooks’ car, and bomb technicians were called in, added that they are also working to access Crooks’s phone to learn more about what led up the attempted assassination.
